Lightfoot’s proposals, which will need to be approved by City Council in the coming weeks, include extending a 15% cap on third-party delivery companies “until after the city recovers from the pandemic.” The mayor also is pushing a discounted payment plan for businesses with city debt to make it easier for them to renew licenses and continue operating.
The deal, which is subject to customary approvals, will make Amazon, already one of the most powerful and valuable companies in the world, even bigger. Regulators around the world are scrutinizing Amazon’s business practices, specifically the way it looks at information from businesses that sell goods on its site and uses it to create its own Amazon-branded products.
Stores that have stuck around, like Central Camera, give customers things they can’t get from big chains, like expert advice, services and specialty products, Arnold said. But e-commerce has grown even more during the pandemic. About 60% of all dollars spent on technology are spent online, up from 44% at the end of 2019, Arnold said.
The firm is leasing just under 10,000 square feet, a small fraction of the 2.5 million square feet of office space in the building. But Fyllo chose the sprawling riverfront building, redeveloped by 601W Cos., because it has plenty of office space for expansion in the years to come, said Bronstein, Fyllo’s CEO.
In Lakeview, LaVine took a loss on the mansion, which he purchased for $3.25 million in 2018. Built by JDL Construction in 2006, the mansion has five baths, a family room with a stone fireplace and a kitchen with a Lacanche range, a Traulsen refrigerator and freezer and a built-in breakfast area. The primary bedroom suite has a bathroom with dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a walk-through closet with an island and solid wood built-ins.
“The situation has become more and more egregious,” said Christopher Gindlesperger, a spokesman for the National Confectioners Association, a trade organization in Washington, D.C., with 350 members, including Mars Inc., Hershey’s, Ferrara and Mondelez. “The cannabis companies cannot and should not be allowed to tarnish existing brands at will. It creates consumer confusion.”
