Others are offering bigger-than-usual signing bonuses, like Amazon, which is looking to hire 7,700 employees in Illinois as part of 125,000 new transportation and fulfillment jobs nationwide, on top of 75,000 new jobs the company announced in May. The Illinois jobs have an average starting wage of $16 per hour and can come with bonuses of up to $3,000 in certain locations, including the company’s warehouse in Monee.

While the Woodfield store’s closure will leave Sears with no department stores in Illinois, Transformco said it has 11 Sears Hometown stores in the state. Those stores carry tools, appliances and lawn and garden equipment and are primarily operated by independent dealers or franchisees. There are more than 300 large and small format Sears and Kmart stores nationwide, Transformco said.

But the delta variant has changed where Americans spend their time and money. Online sales soared 5.5% last month, while sales at restaurants and bars, many of whom believed they were through the worst of the pandemic until the arrival of delta, were flat from the month before.

Joliet Township High School District 204, which has two main campuses, is testing about 1,300 of its 6,800 students, with mandatory testing for student-athletes and kids participating in certain activities, such as band or choir, said Chris Olson, director of human resources. The district began testing summer school students months ago, and its fall students Sept. 7, which was its fourth week of school.
