Federal officials do publish data on hospitals, but the latest data is from the week ending Dec. 30. Of 24 Chicago hospitals reporting data on their intensive care units, which treat the sickest patients, five said they were nearly or completely full: Roseland, Mount Sinai, Holy Cross, St. Bernard and South Shore. Several others reported less than 20% of ICU beds available, a state metric signaling a stressed facility. It’s unclear how well the data is vetted, with some busy hospitals showing zero ICU patients, a near impossibility.

1837, for example, said it submitted a 728-page license application in April 2020, which typically costs tens of thousands of dollars or more in legal and consulting fees. As part of its application, 1837 secured land for a marijuana growing warehouse in northwest suburban Wheeling. Under its purchase and sale agreement, 1837 paid $20,000 in earnest money.

This includes students with intellectual disabilities, mild autism, learning difficulties, emotional regulation issues and social anxiety — young people who lack tools to manage traditional education, while not qualifying for more extensive help usually reserved for those with more profound symptoms.

Doctors also, however, cautioned that it’s important to balance the need for safety with children’s mental health. Parents should control what they can control within their own homes — such as wake times, bed times, and positive relationships — to help kids through this latest surge, especially as some schools go remote, said Dr. Laura Yahr Nelson, a pediatric psychiatrist with Aurora Children’s Health.

U.S. jobless claims rose by 7,000 last week to 207,000. The four-week average of claims, which smooths out week-to-week gyrations, rose by nearly 4,800 to just below 205,000. Despite the increases, the numbers show that weekly claims are below the 220,000 typical before the pandemic struck the U.S. economy in March 2020.

With the merger, NorthShore — Edward-Elmhurst joins the ranks of Illinois’ other large hospital systems in the state, including Advocate Aurora Health, which has 10 hospitals in Illinois; Northwestern Medicine, which has 11 hospitals; and Amita Health, which has 19 hospitals in Illinois. Amita Health, however, announced last year that it planned to split into two, with the organizations behind Amita — AdventHealth and Ascension — deciding to unwind their partnership.

Like Cook County, the order, issued by the Skokie Health and Human Services Department, requires proof of vaccination for anyone five years and older who are customers of “indoor settings where food and drink are served for on-premises consumption, like restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, as well as in fitness facilities.”
