On June 29, at its new production space, the Sisters in Cinema Media Arts Center hosted a launch event, in collaboration with the first Sundance Institute in Chicago, for the Chicago Media Coalition. The coalition brings together four local media nonprofits — including Sisters in Cinema, Full Spectrum Features, Mezcla Media Collective and Open Television (OTV) — to build a sustainable and equitable diverse media system.
Founded by Yvonne Welbon, an award-winning filmmaker, the center celebrates the talents and stories of Black women, girls, and gender-nonconforming individuals.
The event showcased the vibrant media ecosystem of Chicago and emphasized the importance of local opportunities. Welbon highlighted that no one should have to leave their community to achieve their dreams.
The TRiiBE’s video coverage, shot by Morgan Elise Johnson, features interviews with Colette Ghunim, co-founder of Mezcla Media Collective; and Elijah McKinnon, co-founder and executive director of OTV.
The event included networking sessions, panels, and a lively celebration of collective power. Chicago’s media scene is thriving, and we’re here to support and uplift our storytellers.
