Advocate Aurora Health, which has 26 hospitals in Illinois and Wisconsin, is delaying and rescheduling certain procedures to times and places where it has the staffing and capacity to perform them, said Dr. Jeff Bahr, chief medical group officer. It is continuing to do surgeries in situations where not performing them might result in a person needing hospitalization, or losing a limb. Advocate is also continuing to perform cancer treatments and diagnoses, he said.

Harrison, a former financial analyst, moved into real estate full-time after buying and selling her first home before the Great Recession. The sale was a “blessing,” according to Harrison, who made more money from her first home than her work salary, owning it for less than a year. Harrison flipped homes in Greater Grand Crossing, Chatham, Pullman, Roseland, Morgan Park, Bronzeville, Englewood, and Auburn Gresham. She acquired a lot of the properties through the Cook County Land Bank Authority.

To make that payment and afford such other necessities as housing, food and utilities, a household would have to take home about $60,000 a year, or $75,000 before taxes, said Kimberly Palmer, a personal finance specialist at NerdWallet. In 2020, the U.S. median pretax household income was $67,521, the Census Bureau says.

Located in Oak Brook’s gated Hunter Trails subdivision, the 22-room former Chelios mansion has seven bathrooms, four fireplaces, custom millwork and a kitchen with two refrigerators, a wine cooler, and a large island with a breakfast bar. Other features include a finished basement with a putting green and an exercise room, a great room with a wet bar, and a primary bedroom suite with a balcony and a digital heat-controlled shower.

“Everyone closes his books on Dec. 31, and until then it’s all about making as many sales as possible despite the lack of vehicles or customer choices,” said Doug Gerald, 40, owner and president of the Gerald Auto Group in North Aurora, Naperville, and Matteson, in late December.

“Everything appeared to be in place for a start,” he said. “However, with the unsustainable costs of construction materials including such items as lumber that skyrocketed in costs in 2020, then fell back to the normal market conditions in mid-2021, has jumped again in costs, up approximately 118% since July of 2021.

Raskin said he understands why city officials are instituting the mandate, but he’s not comfortable with his staff asking customers for what he considers to be private health information. He’s worried checking vaccine cards will slow down business, leading to frustrated customers. And, he said, the mechanics will be tricky to navigate, including the cost of extra labor, as he’s already struggling to hire enough workers.

“This is a playbook that’s been run time and time again,” said Jeffrey Cramer, a former federal prosecutor who is now senior managing director of Guidepost Solutions. “A year may seem like a long time, but in the Dirksen Federal Building, especially during a pandemic where things slowed down for a while, it’s not unreasonable.”
