From roughly 1800 to the mid-1830s, the Natchez Trace saw heavy traffic from soldiers, Kaintucks, animals, wagons and more. Stands, or inns, sprang up to serve the travelers, along with ferries, stores and other services. Yet a trip along the heavily used federal road was far from a pleasant stroll. “Hardships of journeying on the Old Trace included heat, mosquitoes, poor food, hard beds (if any), disease, swollen rivers, and sucking swamps,” reads one interpretive sign, noting that “a broken leg or arm could spell death for the lone traveler.”

Around 7:15 p.m., a 36-year-old man was shot on the West Side in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, in the 3200 block of West Maypole Avenue. He was struck in the back and leg, and arrived by private car at Stroger Hospital in critical condition, according to police.

On Wednesday afternoon, following the Bears’ organized team activity practice at Halas Hall, Dalton made it clear his focus and mindset didn’t change on the last weekend of April, when Justin Fields entered the picture. North Aurora police officers were called to Woodman’s, 151 Hansen Blvd., at 5:23 p.m. Tuesday for two gunshot victims. A 17-year-old boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his neck and a 26-year-old man was taken to the hospital in fair condition with a gunshot wound to his leg, police said.
