At a news conference Thursday, local officials urged Chicagoans to stay safe in the water after a nearly record-breaking number of drownings in 2020. Last year, 56 people drowned in Lake Michigan, and nine people had drowned in the lake in 2021 as of Thursday afternoon, according to Dave Benjamin, co-founder of the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, which tracks drownings and advocates for water safety.
About 1:45 p.m., officers responded to an alert from ShotSpotter, the city’s gunshot detection system, of 10 rounds in the 1100 block of South Karlov Avenue, according to the police report. The officers were flagged down by a male who directed them to the back porch of an apartment building and officers found the boy lying facedown on the stairs.
The ride-share driver drove them to the residence of one of the victim’s relatives in the 8300 block of South Luella Avenue, where the Chicago Fire Department was called. The driver then drove to South Chicago Avenue and Jeffrey Boulevard, where he flagged down police.
”I think when people see that the downtown is fully reopened, and I’m seeing it now there’s an uptick in the number of people taking the trains now, traffic is definitely back up. I think there’s a real hunger to be back together,” she said during an appearance on WGN-TV. “Just as we’re seeing people really excited to be in restaurants, music venues, and just outdoors, we’re going to see people wanting to come back downtown to work.”

Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 4900 block of West Wrightwood Avenue about 1:20 a.m. and found the man lying on a porch, unresponsive, according to a police media notification. The man had been shot in the chest and ankle and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The woman also was lying on the porch, with gunshot wounds to the chest and arm, and was taken to Illinois Masonic, where she was initially in serious condition.
