“I’m super excited,” Love said last week about the opportunity to play preseason games. “This is the moment I’ve been preparing for ever since last year not having preseason. It’s almost like I’ve been training a year just for this first preseason game. I’m sure excited to get out there and get back to playing ball.”

Montgomery has looked good during training camp. I don’t know that he’s going to be noticeably faster this season. Generally, once running backs enter the NFL, they get slower as the wear and tear adds up. Sure, a player can get a little leaner, but a running back is what he is by the time he’s a professional. Montgomery never will be a home run hitter. It’s possible he could have improved his lateral quickness a little bit, but he’s not going to look like Alvin Kamara this season. I think you will see the same player who runs with excellent balance and vision. It’s smart that Montgomery really pushed himself in training during the offseason, and provided the offensive line comes together — a real question right now — he could have a very productive season. Montgomery’s opportunities and the performance of the line will determine his success more than any speed training. If the Bears remain committed to the ground game, which often can be a function of game circumstances, I could see him topping 1,200 yards. That benchmark will be easier for healthy running backs to hit with a 17th regular-season game.

“Got a lot better there the second through the fifth, sixth, but was just trying to find my rhythm, my tempo (in the first),” Keuchel said. “It just seemed I was really sluggish, just felt a little bit different than I usually do. That was the main thing, trying to find that connection point, and thankfully I did.”

“That’s one of those keys, to continue to pitch into the ballgame, get us some more outs, especially in today’s (doubleheader),” manager David Ross said. “It was nice for him to settle in and still give us some outs after that, but things happen quick, especially here (in the majors) sometimes, and he settled in nicely and definitely locked it back in. It was nice to see.”
“Even brought the curveball out a few times,” Giolito said. “But it was more the sequencing. I was able to get swing and miss on the changeup when I would show that elevated heater, or leave it at the top of the zone and get the swing and miss on the slider when I’m working that slider away, away, away, or pop one in or when the fastball’s down, I can use the slider off that.
