Among the dozen new states are Illinois neighbors Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa, according to a Tuesday tweet from the Chicago Department of Public Health. Also added were California, Delaware, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon and Washington state.
Under Illinois’ “Safe Haven” law, enacted in 2001, a parent is able to safely relinquish an infant 30 days old or younger to a hospital, police station, fire station, or emergency medical facility and to leave the infant with personnel of the facility without fear of legal repercussions.
