Two men were sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison for two armed robberies committed in Frankfort and New Lenox in 2019.
Justin Brown, 24, of Park Forest, and Terwon Matthews, 25, of Chicago, pleaded guilty to felony armed robbery before Judge David Carlson for the November 2019 robberies, according to a news release from the Will County state’s attorney’s affice.
Shortly before 6 a.m. Nov. 16, 2019, Brown and Matthews, and two others, cut off a woman who was attempting to withdraw money from an ATM on LaGrange Road in Frankfort, according to the release.
The group blocked the woman’s car by cutting in front of her, according to the release. Brown and Matthews, armed with a gun, took her phone and credit card before withdrawing money from the ATM, according to the release.
They then took the woman’s car, and, with her still inside, used it for a three-hour armed robbery spree taking cash withdrawals from the woman’s accounts and buying items from different stores in the south suburbs, according to the release. A total of $8,900 was taken from her accounts, according to the release.
Ultimately, they left the woman and her car in Chicago before driving off in another vehicle, according to the release.
On Nov. 29, 2019, at about 6 a.m, Brown and Matthews, masked and believed to be carrying a gun, walked up to a man in New Lenox as he walked to his vehicle parked in the driveway and demanded his debit card, according to the release.
They put the man into the car they arrived in and for four hours kept him covered with a jacket while they engaged in an armed robbery spree, using the man’s debit card, taking cash advances and making purchases in the south suburbs and northwest Indiana, according to the release.
After the man’s bank closed the account, they left him along the expressway in Hammond, Indiana, according to the release.
Brown and Matthews will each receive 1,333 days credit for time served. They will also serve 18 months mandatory supervised release after completion of their sentence, according to the release.
