A teenager remained in critical condition after he was shot, apparently accidentally, by a friend over the weekend, the Lake County sheriff’s office said Monday.
The 15-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen in the basement of a home in the 36700 block of North Grandview near Gurnee at about 6 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.
Police said the 15-year-old was with two 16-year-old boys when one of them produced a handgun and fired it. Police said they do not believe the boy with the gun meant to shoot anybody.
Sheriff’s deputies responded and rendered aid until paramedics arrived. The injured teen was brought to Advocate Condell Medical Center and was reported in critical condition, police said
The semi-automatic pistol was a “ghost gun,” police said, which are unregulated firearms usually built from a kit.
The teen who fired the gun was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, reckless conduct and unlawful use of a weapon. He was taken to the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center.
