Storm Damage Assessments in Cook County Warrant FEMA Disaster Declaration Request

After a rigorous assessment conducted by ten Preliminary Damage Assessment teams, compelling evidence has been gathered to warrant a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Federal Disaster Declaration. The assessment, which has occurred since Tuesday, involved a coordinated effort of local, state and federal officials braving the sweltering heat and humidity to evaluate the damages caused by flash flooding in Cicero, Berwyn, Stickney and the west side of Chicago on July 2.

Governor JB Pritzker expressed concern over the severe home and property damage inflicted upon numerous Illinoisans during the storms and flooding in early July. Recognizing the exhaustion of local resources, the governor emphasized the significance of federal assistance, which can provide vital tools to aid those in need.

Hopeful that the request for federal aid would be approved, he extended his gratitude to the dedicated damage assessment teams and everyone involved in the relief efforts, working tirelessly on the ground to ensure the well-being of residents and assist in rebuilding their lives.

According to Alicia Tate-Nadeau, Director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), the assessment teams conducted thorough surveys of over 2,800 residences, confirming the severity of the damages. Consequently, there is no need for further verification of additional properties.

Based on this comprehensive evaluation, the state, in collaboration with FEMA, is now seeking an expedited FEMA Major Disaster Declaration from the President.

If the declaration request receives approval, residents living in Cook County who suffered probable damage directly resulting from the flash flood on July 2nd, 2023, would be eligible to apply for Individual Assistance, offering crucial support to aid in their recovery and rehabilitation.

Governor JB Pritzker had previously signed an Illinois disaster proclamation for the severe weather and derecho that struck Central Illinois on June 29th, 2023, as well as for the flash flood storm in Cook County on July 2nd, 2023. These declarations underscore the seriousness of the natural disasters and the urgent need for comprehensive assistance to restore affected communities.
