An Antioch Community High School student was taken into custody Tuesday after a routine school search turned up a handgun in the student’s car, according to police.
Police said there was no reason to believe that there was ever a threat at the school, or that students or staff were in any danger.
A police dog doing a regularly scheduled administrative search of the school parking lot located the gun Tuesday, police said. The weapon was impounded immediately and the student taken into custody, police said.
The student is 21 and attends the school part-time in an alternative education program. He remained in custody while police investigated.
Antioch police Chief Geoffrey Guttschow said the incident shows the effectiveness of the canine scent search teams.
“I would like to recognize District 117 for its commitment to ensuring the safety of students at our high school,” Guttschow said.
