A person was shot and killed Thursday morning inside a Mariano’s store in Evergreen Park in what police are calling a “domestic situation.”

Authorities arrived at the scene on the 2500 block of West 95th Street and “cautiously approached and entered immediately,” said Evergreen Park police Chief Michael Saunders. Police evacuated customers and “continued inward to attempt to locate an offender,” Saunders said.

During the search, they located the 21-year-old victim, a Mariano’s employee, with multiple gunshot wounds in the back of the store.

The suspected shooter reportedly left in his vehicle after the shooting, but was found by police and brought into custody within the hour.

Surveillance videos showed the victim walking away from a male subject before the shooting, Saunders said.

Evergreen Park police said the shooting was a “domestic situation” and there is no active threat to the public. The area remains an active crime scene and they asked the public to avoid the site.

In an emailed statement, Amanda Puck, a Mariano’s spokesperson, said, “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at our Mariano’s Evergreen Park store.”

Puck said the store will remain closed while the investigation continues, and said they initiated counseling services for the store’s associates.
