Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 health concern in Northwest Indiana.

Community Healthcare System will host “Exploring Advanced Care with Heart-Saving Treatments” from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center, 10215 Broadway, in Crown Point.

Community Healthcare System cardiologists will discuss treatment methods and ways to reduce risk of heart failure and stroke.

At 1:30 p.m., Samer Abbas, MD, medical director of cardiovascular services at Community Hospital and the Structural Heart Program of Community Healthcare System, will present information about transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR.

TAVR is a minimally invasive surgery used to treat aortic stenosis, a disease that causes the aortic valve to narrow and restrict blood flow in the heart. The procedure is performed in a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room, led by fellowship-trained interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons.

At 2 p.m., interventional cardiologist Kais Yehyawi, MD, will discuss atrial fibrillation, blood thinners and the WatchmanFLXTM procedure.

WATCHMAN is an advanced implantable technology used to help reduce a patient’s risk of stroke. The device offers an alternative to long-term blood-thinning warfarin therapy to reduce stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation (A-fib) not caused by a heart valve issue.

The hospitals of Community Healthcare System – Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart – operate one of the largest and most advanced cardiovascular programs in Northwest Indiana. The Structural Heart & Valve Center team is dedicated to providing patients with access to the most advanced treatments for structural heart and valve diseases. Since 2017, the program has grown into one of the leading structural heart centers in the Chicago and Northwest Indiana area, surpassing even academic medical centers in both volume and quality outcomes.

To register for the free presentation, call 219-836-3477. For more information about cardiovascular services at Community Healthcare System, visit COMHS.org/heart.
