National Weather Service officials are expecting a second round of thunderstorms to hit portions of north central, northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana later Thursday.
An elevated thunderstorm risk and a slight chance of tornadoes in the area is expected, as well as up to dollar-size hail. Winds up to 60 mph are possible, officials said.
A few rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected Thursday into the evening hours. Officials said cloud cover and showers could keep temperatures cooler in the afternoon hours, that would reduce the threat of severe weather. But if sunshine breaks through, temperatures could rise, creating thunderstorms with large size hail and damaging winds.
Southerly winds are expected to gust between 35 to 45 mph with the strongest winds expected east of Interstate 57 and across northwest Indiana, officials said.
Morning conditions at Midway Airport are mostly cloudy at 68 degrees, and at O’Hare International Airport conditions are the same at 67 degrees.
