The Chicago Fire Department’s hazmat team responded to an ammonia gas leak at Home City Ice in the West Elsdon neighborhood Thursday morning, fire officials said. The area’s air quality was “good” and residents can safely leave their homes as of 7:39 a.m.
A large plume was visible from the ice plant located at 3604 West 59th Street, fire officials said. Hydrants were opened to help dispel the ammonia while crews attempted to enter the building to shut off gas valves.
Fire officials said no injuries were reported.
