ANAHEIM, CALIF. — Minnesota Twins reliever Tyler Duffey was suspended for three games and manager Rocco Baldelli received a one-game ban Thursday for intentionally throwing behind Yermín Mercedes of the Chicago White Sox in a sequence of events that sparked a debate on the importance of the unwritten rules of baseball.
“I think you’re probably going to have to direct those questions to US Soccer,” he said. “She’s an allocated player, they have the Olympics coming up. What they do or do not want to disclose about her injury and who they want or not want to know, that will be up to them, not up to us.”
Hoyer voiced optimism about the current state of the Cubs, who’ve been at or near .500 for weeks, while offering no thoughts on the likelihood of retaining impending free agents Kris Bryant, Javier Baez or Anthony Rizzo. There are no ongoing contract conversations with the three, Hoyer said, and he still is unsure of how the trade deadline will play out for the Cubs.
“Being transparent about it, we’re not a player away from being 85%,” he said. “It’s just a disappointing thing that we will have anxieties and restrictions that others don’t. That few days we had (in April), scratching Kyle (Hendricks) before a start when he was congested, and when (coaches) Chris Young and (Craig) Driver had it. Going through all that, it was a pretty horrible feeling, a helpless feeling, and the fact we weren’t able to eliminate that is disappointing.
“This is an incredible opportunity for our entire university community, from student-athletes to coaches, alumni and fans,” Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said in a statement. “We are thrilled that our program will get to experience the beautiful Irish culture, while we continue to help grow the game of college football on a global stage.”
“I am so thrilled to be joining the Fire at such an important inflection point in the cub’s history,” Glassman Chrein said in a statement. “I’m fortunate to join a team where the owner loves Chicago, cares deeply about the players and staff, and is fully invested in building a successful team on and off the pitch. I’m looking forward to getting started and meeting everyone involved with the club, especially the fans.”
Investigators found that allegations about Philbert’s conduct had reached campus officials at certain points of his career but no one intervened. In Anderson’s case, no one took meaningful action, despite a “destructive pattern of sexual misconduct,” according to a report by the WilmerHale law firm, which was hired by the school to interview victims.
Sabathia: He’s just so out of touch with the game, and most people are, cuz. … He should not be managing one of the best teams in the American League, period! The fact that Tim Anderson, basically the captain of the team, had to go on Instagram and step up for his teammate, like ‘yeah, the game wasn’t over,’ if you’re gonna put a f–king position player in to pitch, guess what? If he’s gonna lob s–t over the plate, we gonna tee off. Put a ten-run rule up there, cuz! If y’all don’t wanna see people get embarassed and position players pitch and all that s–t, then make it a ten-run rule so the f–king game will be over and you don’t have these stupid-ass unwritten rules. Now, you have a rookie that’s been basically carrying your f–king team these first six weeks of the season … and now you have a don’t problem with the weird-ass Minnesota Twins throwing behind one of your biggest hitters? That’s just f–king stupid. It’s stupid. Period. I’m sorry. This s–t is terrible. He shouldn’t be f–king managing that team. If you not gonna step up and have your players’ backs, what’s the point of being the f–king manager of the White Sox? S–t is stupid as f–k. Sorry. I was so mad, cuz. I was re-pissed off yesterday when Duffy threw behind him. … Even the Twins getting mad! Cuz, play better! You guys f–king suck! You’re three games under f–king .500! You’re supposed to be the best team in the Central! You suck! Ruocco: They’re 12 games under .500. R2C2 Podcast
Meyer has said repeatedly that signing players who already know his methodology would be helpful in Year 1. Jacksonville now has six guys on its roster who previously played for Meyer: Tebow, Farrell, running back Carlos Hyde, guard Andrew Norwell, defensive end Lerentee McCray and defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton.
“We have to take points at home, that’s for sure,” Berić said. “You know how difficult for us it is to play away. I mean, in every league it’s difficult to play away. … It’s really crucial (at) this point to take points because after, if we are not in a good spot, we will have difficulties. So it’s really, really important.”
