“Across the board, even at Triple A, you’ve got to be able to make adjustments,” he said. “Understand how they’re pitching you. Right now, I hit a couple of games where I struggled a little bit. It’s try not to do too much. Just being able to control my emotions, control my breathing, slowing down the game a little bit more. That’s the next step.”
“We make it a definite policy that we play against the other team, we do not play against the umpires,” La Russa said. “They have a very difficult job. You get your team to play with emotion, that’s how you succeed and compete, and in a situation like that we got emotional. But if you play nine innings or 8½ innings, a couple of those calls did not decide it.
Seth Jones, a 26-year-old Texas native and son of former NBA forward Popeye Jones, led Blue Jackets defenseman this past season with 28 points (five goals and 23 assists). He made the NHL’s second All-Star team in 2017-18 after setting career highs in goals (16), assists (41) and points (57) with the Blue Jackets, and he played in four consecutive All-Star Games from 2017 to 2020.
The Cubs had no problem handling the 30-69 Diamondbacks, a team headed in the wrong direction with no sign of recovering soon. Zach Davies, also available for the right price, pitched well for five-plus innings. Catcher Robinson Chirinos, who hit two home runs while filling in for Willson Contreras, also has some trade value, though he just got here.
“Flexible and adaptable will continue to be key,” Aponte added, noting that Goodell’s memo was vetted by people in a variety of NFL roles. “We are committed to playing a full season as scheduled. There is the no-play/no-pay provision (from 2020), which has been agreed to with the players’ association and will carry into this season.”
Sogard was signed to a minor-league deal in early March and competed in spring training with Nico Hoerner, David Bote and Ildemaro Vargas for playing time at second base. The Cubs surprisingly sent Hoerner, a first-round pick who came up in 2019, to the minors, leaving Bote and Sogard as the two second basemen.
Most countries selected two people for flag duty, but not all of them did. United Arab Emirates, Oman, Brunei, Mali, Mauritania, Libya, Ethiopia, Samoa, Djibouti, Suriname, Tajikistan, Vanuatu, Bermuda and Bangladesh did not have a female bearer listed.
