“When Skipper (Tony La Russa) told me I was going to catch him, I just wanted to watch (video of) what his outings had been, what he does, what he likes and what he doesn’t like,” Zavala said before Wednesday’s game against the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field. “I watched the Minnesota hitters, whoever I thought was going to be in the lineup, and got a feel for them — what they do and don’t do — and came up with a good game plan.
“The old kind of quip is, Notre Dame loves two things: one is being Catholic, second is independence. Sometimes those things get in reverse order. Sometimes they like independence even more than being Catholic,” joked Phillips, who has a son and daughter who attend Notre Dame.

“To get a guy back who has some proven history in this league and has played at a high level, is exciting for all of us,” Desai said. “Again, we’ve got to make sure he gets back and that we see him play football because none of us have seen him play football in a year.”

“It’s an incredible honor to be selected the flag bearer for Team USA,” Bird said. “I know what that means, because I got to witness Dawn Staley go through it when she was selected in 2004. It’s an honor that is bigger than the moment in that you’ve been selected by your fellow Team USA athletes to represent the entire delegation, and it will last forever.”

“There’s not a whole lot you can do when they get here the day before,” U.S. coach Gregg Popovich said Wednesday from Tokyo. “Luckily, it’s basketball. Try to keep it simple and take care of what we think we can take care of. … The good thing is, they’ll be in shape. I don’t know how the plane’s going to affect them, because it’s not an easy flight.”
