Out on Court 2, third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece was far from his best in a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 loss to 14th-seeded Ugo Humbert of France. Also, 12th-seeded Karen Khachanov of ROC eliminated eighth-seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
Much as they did in the final, the Americans dominated through most of the five-day tournament. They played nine games and only lost one. Plum, the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history, led the way in this one, as well, scoring 55 points over the nine games. She scored all five of her points in the final early to stake the U.S. to a lead it never relinquished.
Markkanen, 24, on one hand put together a career year offensively in 2020-21, shooting a career best 48% from the field and 40% from 3, but also hada career-low 13.6 points, 5.3 rebounds as his playing time dwindled coming off the bench. After four years, the Bears let Mitch Trubisky walk into free agency, and the 2017 No. 2 pick signed a one-year contract to be the Buffalo Bills backup. After a failed attempt to trade for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, the Bears signed Dalton, a 10-year NFL veteran, to a one-year, $10 million contract. When Fields dropped to No. 11 in the draft, general manager Ryan Pace traded up from No. 20 to select him. Pass game coordinator Dave Ragone became the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo added that title.
“I feel like I’ve always been really consistent in that,” Bryant said. “Sometimes the narrative out there has never been right, and it’s been frustrating for me to see some of that. But deep down in my heart, I know I’ve had some of the best memories here and the best times in my life. It’d be really stupid of me not to say hey, if they wanted me here, of course I’m always going to listen because Chicago is a special place to me.”
She continued to work out during the lockdown, trying to keep her body in shape so she would be ready when competition resumed. She also provided lots of content to her blog and YouTube channel, offering insights on fashion, photography, professional sports and her constant travels. In one episode after her Turkish league resumed, she gave a tour of her Istanbul neighborhood and took viewers to the fitting for her wedding dress, which she helped design.
They came into the game just 2-3 this summer after splitting their exhibition games in Las Vegas before the loss to France. They had rarely looked sharp while navigating roster changes, a game cancelation for coronavirus safety concerns and the absence of Jrue Holiday, Khris Middleton and Booker until the eve of their opener because those three had played in the NBA Finals.
The metric mile wasn’t quite the breeze that everyone expected, given Ledecky’s longtime dominance in an event that was finally added to the Olympic program for these games. She built a big lead right from the start, then worked hard to hold off American teammate Erica Sullivan’s blazing finish.
