For the more than 60 athletes with Illinois ties, these Olympics will be the one where they set personal records, fell short of their own expectations, made their debut, suffered a controversial disqualification, won a medal after beating cancer, fought for their sport’s survival, missed their families, advocated for mental health issues, helped a teammate achieve a dream and had historic gold medals hung around their necks.

“The 2021 induction class wants to thank those previous inductees who gave long-winded acceptance speeches,” said Manning, who was presented by his father, Archie, himself a College Football Hall of Fame member. “Forcing us to have a whopping six minutes to recap our football careers. I want to give a special thanks to my old rival Ray Lewis for being here tonight. Ray just finished giving his speech that he started in 2018.”

Three batters later, Eloy Jiménez connected for a two-run homer, setting off the White Sox fans among the 39,412 at the ballpark. The Sox didn’t stop there, getting Davies for a third time in the first inning on Andrew Vaughn’s two-run homer. The early five-run lead was all the Sox needed to power them to a 9-3 victory over the Cubs to sweep the three-game City Series. Jiménez finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and five RBIs against his former organization.

“Coming off of last year and the circumstances we had, it’s a different year than it would be normally anyway,” Hendricks said Sunday. “My body feels really good, but also the spot we’re at as a team, we have opportunities where we can bring a couple guys up and see what we have for the future going forward, so you kind of get to kill two birds with one stone.

“Once they were gone, after two days and we’ve got new faces around here, this is starting to feel more normal, to be honest, because this is our whole life in baseball. Growing up, all the way through high school, college, minor leagues, you’re always jumping team to team and playing with different guys.

“You want to respect all the guys that played in his place,” La Russa said, “but when everybody reported in spring training, the team you wanted to see had (left fielder Eloy Jiménez) and Robert playing a lot. So having them both at the same time, having (injured catcher Yasmani Grandal) back one of these days, that’s something we look forward to.”

“He is a nice-sized guy (6-foot-2, 245 pounds) that has speed and he has experience too, so when you get into these situations in training camp where you’re looking for a little bit of depth, he helps out,” coach Matt Nagy said. “He’s providing great depth and competition, and that’s all we can ask for.”

“I just spoke with him, he’s doing all right,” Boone said before Sunday’s series finale against Seattle. “He’s got symptoms but he’s doing OK. Obviously a little bummed out but hopefully a chance to get rested up and well and be back hopefully sooner rather than later.”
