Fifteen minutes later, a mix of cheers from Cubs fans and boos from Sox fans among the crowd of 39,539 enveloped Kimbrel as he walked off the mound, pulled in the middle of the eighth. Moments earlier, Cubs shortstop Andrew Romine hit a game-tying, three-run homer off Kimbrel. The home run was as stunning as unlikely: Before that fateful pitch, Kimbrel had allowed only two earned runs in 39⅓ innings this season with nearly two years passing since he last surrendered three runs in an outing.

“They call the game, basically — they call the pitches, they call the defense. That’s a very important position. And because she’s a Reyes, she’s got fire and she’s got an arm, too, I’m cool with her being my catcher. The team responds because they know Khloe knows what she’s talking about,” Jones said. He says out of the 21 years he’s been coaching, Kloey is the most intelligent player he’s ever coached.

“His two-strike numbers have been really (good), controlling the zone, mainly for the things he’s done against right-handed pitching has been really obvious,” Ross said. “And when you put up numbers and consistent numbers and be able to do those quality things, that matters. So the next step is, can you do it at this level and how consistent can you be here doing those things?

More gold could be coming for the United States. American Kyle Snyder, the returning Olympic gold medalist in the men’s 97kg freestyle class, will go for gold on Saturday. He defeated Turkey’s Suleyman Karadeniz 5-0 in a semifinal. He will face the Russian Olympic Committee’s Abdulrashid Sadulaev in the final. Sadualev, the No. 1 seed in this class, won gold at 86kg in 2016 and is a four-time world champion.

The team, which pays for its own training, also needed to commit to another year of financial burdens the athletes in less-prominent Olympic sports often endure. USA Gymnastics does not fully fund the team, so athletes and their families must pay for some international travel, training camps, matching warmups and those pricey, heavily bedazzled leotards.
