“It definitely puts you in a dark space when you’re in there, especially those first two days. But I’m so happy to have such an amazing team and such amazing doctors that were working with me to get me through it. … I mean, I was battling for my life. I was in the hospital. And the good thing is now I can hit the ground running, hopefully.”
“José, his consistency and his competitiveness — and the way he prepares, where he literally can attack pitches at all parts of the strike zone — those are represented in his RBI totals,” Sox manager Tony La Russa recently said. “The statistic (leading the league in RBIs), that’s hard-earned, man.
“OK, you made it,” he said. “Now what are you going to do next to keep this job? Like I’ve said before, if you don’t produce in this league then you can’t stick around. Yeah, you made the team. But that wasn’t the end-all, be-all for me.

“With (rookie fifth-round pick) Larry Borom, that’s a guy we had big-time grades on, and he’s (done) nothing but proved that since he’s been here,” Pace said. “And then the addition of Jason Peters, we talked about that a lot. Obviously Juan (Castillo, the line coach) has a lot of background with him. If anything, he’s exceeded expectations already in a short time here. With Jason and Larry, along with our other tackles, we feel pretty good.”
Ohio State-Michigan is arguably the best rivalry in college football but has no trophy. The Buckeyes and Wolverines have combined for nine Heisman Trophy winners, and they should pay homage to two figures who made history — Archie Griffin, the only player to win a Heisman twice, and Charles Woodson, the only primarily defensive player to win the award.
The Irish offense is replacing the school’s winningest quarterback, Ian Book, and six other starters, including four-fifths of the offensive line. Undaunted, Rees said he has seen the offense come together behind quarterback Jack Coan, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, and preseason All-America candidates in running back Kyren Williams, tight end Michael Mayer, center Jarrett Patterson and guard Cain Madden, another grad transfer.
