There was very little the Bears defense did well Sunday night. If you are looking for a few highlights or some silver lining, I would point to the Rams’ second and third series. The defense forced the Rams to kick a field goal both times and turned Los Angeles away after it had first-and-goal from the 2-yard line. Those are the only positives I can come up with from the game. It was a poor effort all around and it was a collective effort in terms of coaches, players, execution. The Rams have one of the best offensive coaches in the league in Sean McVay and a very talented offense. The degree of difficulty was high, but the Bears made too many glaring errors to have a chance.
In the middle of the silence, agent Drew Rosenhaus made it known that Hicks wanted a contract extension with the Bears as he entered the final season of his four-year, $48 million deal. That extension didn’t materialize for Hicks, who will be 32 in November, and the only public voices on the situation until Tuesday were those of general manager Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy, who both recently praised Hicks’ effort and leadership when asked about an unexplained absence in training camp.
“(Monday) night, I was walking through the door at my apartment and kind of grabbed the door frame, the little metal piece where the bolt goes in, and I turned the corner with my hand on that and it sliced my finger open,” Tepera said. “It’s probably about a centimeter big, a little bit deep. Fields (9-for-19, 80 yards, a 59.1 passer rating) was far from spectacular in the second half and certainly was not as impressive as he was in his preseason debut against the Dolphins. He also made a rookie mistake in the fourth quarter, failing to account for a blitz from Bills linebacker Andre Smith, who crushed Fields, sent his helmet flying and forced a fumble. A roughing-the-passer penalty negated the damage of that mistake. But it was a reminder that Fields must continue to work around his inexperience, especially after he produced only nine points on 34 plays over six second-half possessions.

That makes sense from the standpoint that panicking wouldn’t do the coaches or players any good. It’s not like the Bears can make wholesale personnel moves to the 53-man roster. Maybe they’ll swap out nickel cornerback Marqui Christian, whom they cut in a procedural move before Week 1. But promoting Duke Shelley, who was inactive for the Rams game, wouldn’t make the kind of improvement the Bears can get if players such as Mack, Quinn, Hicks, Smith, Jackson and others step up.
