Candace Parker, a two-time league MVP, returned home to Chicago this season after playing her first 13 seasons in Los Angeles and has been a key reason the Sky reached the finals, finishing with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in the clinching game against the Connecticut Sun in the semifinals. The 35-year-old was honored as one of the WNBA’s greatest players during a ceremony after the first quarter of Game 1.

Natalie and Areli Garcia , both in their 20s, were rooting on their brother, Israel, and his girlfriend. Doreen Lew, of Vernon Hills, cheered on her son, Justin, and his fiance, Elizabeth Flores. Casey and Jim Bloomer traveled from New Hampshire to watch their son, Conor, a second-year student at Carle Illinois College of Medicine, run in the marathon.

“Yeah, he does a lot of different things for us that we were missing last year, the faceoffs, the battles, he’s so good down low in the offensive zone, there’s not many guys who are better and it just adds a different dimension to our team,” Colliton said. “We have to manage him and try to put him in a position to succeed, keep him fresh as much as we can.”

“In the couple years he was with (the Minnesota Lynx) and the time he had with Dan (Hughes with the San Antonio Stars), I think helped shape the vision he wanted his Chicago Sky team to be,” Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said of Wade. “If you look at the pieces that had been there, like Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley, they had gone through a lot of change and James gave them stability.”
“I think for the most part you have to let go of what’s happened,” Dylan Cease, the scheduled starter for Game 3, said Saturday. “We can’t change what’s happened, and now we’re just focused on doing everything we can to put ourselves in a position to basically execute at a high level and bring out our best the next couple of games.”
