Hawks players wore sweaters with Shaw’s name and No. 65 on the backs during warmups, and a video tribute aired before the puck dropped. Shaw, 30, played 362 games and recorded 75 goals, 76 assists and 339 penalty minutes with the Hawks. He retired after last season.

“No. 2, and probably just as importantly, it’s just people skills. You could see how he had been able to build relationships across a number of different groups during his time at San Francisco in a role that can be very challenging, because you have to be able to not only develop (analytic) insights, but communicate them and get people to buy in. And then the other thing was just his breadth of understanding of the sport and football operations. So even though he had formally just led the 49ers’ research group, you could tell that he understood team building, people, relationships and managerial skills at a much higher level.”
“The game is faster, it’s harder,” Reichel said. “You get more hits, but I just watch hockey all the time, NHL hockey and my shifts, and try to learn from that. We have a lot of videos in Rockford with the coaches, so I try to learn from them and try to put in my game, and that’s the reason why I feel better now and feel more comfortable on the smaller ice.”
“Everybody wants to win one for her,” McCaskey said. “And we’re doing everything we can to make that happen. At one point in our conversations, I asked her for her assessment of our season, and she said, as only a mother can, ‘I’m very, very disappointed.’”

After bringing back most of the core, this is where the Sky front office has to get creative. The Sky own the seventh pick in this year’s draft, which has a salary base of $69,224. Assuming they keep the pick, that would leave them with a little more than $62,000 in cap space. They would have to shop for players with two years of experience or less because veterans with three years or more make a minimum of $72,121.
“I always say, if you’re getting the chances, then hopefully it’s starting to come,” he said. “When you’re creating and hitting posts, getting chances, getting clear shots, setting guys up, you’re always trying to make the right play as an offensive guy, then let the goals and assists work themselves out after that.”
