Those employees work in offices under the Cook County president, in the county clerk’s office, in civilian positions in the sheriff’s office and at Cook County Health. Those who work at Cook County Health are employed at Stroger and Provident hospitals, clinics and in mental health services at Cermak. They include health care professionals, technicians, technologists and service and maintenance workers.
AAA anticipates near-record high travel volumes nationally. More than 47.7 million Americans will take at least one trip over the holiday weekend, according to AAA, which defines the weekend as the period between Monday and July 5. Of those, a record 43.6 million will travel by car, an 8% increase compared with 2019, which had the previous record. And 3.5 million people will fly, representing a 164% increase from 2020, when the pandemic caused many to avoid the air.
The state’s highest court last year ordered that speedy trial deadlines could be suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ordinarily, defendants can formally demand trial, at which point prosecutors have a specific time frame in which they must bring them to trial or the case is dismissed.
The Indiana lawsuit maintains the requirement wrongly singles out doctors providing abortion drugs and their patients. The plaintiffs include Planned Parenthood, which operates abortion clinics in Indianapolis, Merrillville, Bloomington and Lafayette, and groups that operate other clinics in Indianapolis and South Bend.

Current and former Lightfoot advisers, however, complain that she doesn’t take advice and can be difficult to approach. Like her predecessor, Emanuel, Lightfoot is known to be profane and hard-charging with other elected officials, once telling aldermen “don’t come to me for s—” if they voted against her budget.
“This fire, because of it involving lithium batteries, normal conventional firefighting such as water or firefighting foam will not extinguish this fire, in fact, it will make it more violent and react more violently if we introduce water or firefighting foam,” Steffes said during a news conference Monday afternoon. “We made the decision to allow this fire to burn its course.”
Junked automobiles, used appliances and other metallic waste would be shredded at the plant. Opponents say granting a permit to Southside Recycling would amount to environmental racism because it would move a polluting business from Lincoln Park, a white, wealthy neighborhood, to a Latino-majority community.

In addition, Wilson is suing one living former police superintendent, Terry Hillard, and the estate of a deceased former police superintendent, LeRoy Martin. Daley, Hillard, Martin and other top brass covered up a pattern of torture under Burge for years, Wilson alleges in the suit.
A 68-year-old man from Montgomery was killed around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday morning when his truck tractor struck the rear of another freightliner truck stopped for road construction near 5th Avenue in Countryside on Interstate 294 south, according to a State Police news release. The driver of the second truck tractor, a 54-year-old woman from Pennsylvania, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
