Republicans, who restated arguments about a lack of transparency by Democrats in the mapmaking process, had also asked the federal court to rule that Democrats could not have a do-over of the map. They said the state constitution requires a map to be effective by June 30, otherwise a bipartisan commission is required to draw a map. After the commission invariably deadlocks, a ninth member is picked by chance as a tiebreaker to decide partisan control of the map.

Earlier this year, the McHenry County Board voted to continue keeping immigrants in the jail, despite pleas by immigrant advocates to end the practice. The federal contract has paid the county up to $10 million annually in some years, but much less recently following COVID-related reductions. The McHenry jail recently has been holding about 180 immigration detainees.

“This nomination is deeply shameful. As mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel helped cover up the murder of Laquan McDonald — a mere teenager when he was shot 16 times in the back by a Chicago police officer,” Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, said in a statement. “This alone should be flatly disqualifying for any position of public trust, let alone representing the United States as an ambassador.”

“We take seriously, and will vigorously investigate, any criminal offense that contributes to the distrust around vaccines and vaccination status,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Polite Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division in a written statement. “The Department of Justice and its law enforcement partners are committed to protecting the American people from these offenses during this national emergency.”

The advisories were issued along the coast from Wisconsin to Indiana, including all of the northern Illinois shoreline. The weather service warned: “Swimming conditions will be life-threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers.” The waves are expected to be from 3 to 6 feet high, “which are typically the most deadly as they can catch swimmers off-guard.”
