Earlier this year, the McHenry County Board voted to continue keeping immigrants in the jail, despite pleas by immigrant advocates to end the practice. The federal contract has paid the county up to $10 million annually in some years, but much less recently following COVID-related reductions. The McHenry jail recently has been holding about 180 immigration detainees.
