About 12:10 p.m., two men, ages 36 and 32, were inside a vehicle when a sedan approached and someone began to shoot in their direction. The older man was shot in the forehead, and was taken in critical condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The other man suffered a graze wound to the right side of the face, and went to the same hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

In total, the four plane crashes at the twin towers, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killed nearly 3,000 people and redefined the landscape of America for the next two decades, including the yearslong military occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The latter of those conflicts ended last month in a hasty withdrawal, marred by a terrorist suicide bombing that killed 13 Americans and 169 Afghans.

The boy, who is not being named due to his age, was identified as the person who took a 54-year-old man’s vehicle by force Wednesday in the 200 block of West 22nd Place. He also was accused of taking a 39-year-old woman’s property Thursday in the 600 block of North LaSalle Drive, police said.

“People had to travel a thousand miles to get their health care because of this Texas law, so that’s one reason why we’re out here protesting in Chicago,” Welch said. “The second reason is because our surrounding states that already have abortion restrictions in place are looking at similar bans, so even more patients would have to come to us, will have to travel, for this essential care.”

Minutes later in the Austin neighborhood, a 27-year-old man was in front of a residence in the 5500 block of West Adams Street at approximately 12:58 p.m. when he heard gunshots and felt pain. He was struck in the head and shoulder, according to a police notification. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

But even since July 2020, when the team took shape in some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods on the South and West sides, the violence has not let up. Through Labor Day, official police statistics show, Chicago recorded 540 homicides, 14 more than the same period in 2020, which ended with more than 760 killings — among the highest annual homicide tallies, the city has seen since the 1990s. There have also been 3,043 people shot through Labor Day in Chicago, a jump of more than 9% compared to 2,781 a year earlier, the data show.

“We are deeply concerned about Ald. Gardiner’s apparent recurrent use of sexist and homophobic language toward one of his colleagues and toward multiple women who work in and around City Council,” the group’s statement reads in part. “In addition to being a legislative body, the City Council is a workplace for hundreds of people. All of us have an obligation to ensure our work environment is safe and inclusive, especially for women. That means we must all speak up and speak out against any effort by a member of this body to demean, disparage or inflict inappropriate retaliation on individuals who work in this space.”
