About 2:40 p.m., the boy was in front of a business in the 8300 block of South Holland Road when a vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots, police said. The boy was shot in the chest and was initially taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

Five people, including Hicks, were originally charged in connection with the shootings that killed Gadau, 17, and injuried his female friend Jeanette Spitz. Prosecutors said the shooting was part of a drug robbery gone wrong. The group planned to steal $500 worth of cannabis from Gadau’s friend Jeanette Spitz, who was shot in the face and seriously wounded during the robbery in Skokie in September 2014, prosecutors said.
At some point before Tuesday’s hearing, Cole also admitted to another, unrelated murder that happened July 18, two days after Alexander Davis, 29, was fatally shot, officials said. During that taped conversation, Cole said he had been one of the gunmen in the July 16 homicide. Cole was identified in both cases because a Lexus used in both shootings was registered under his name, according to prosecutors.

Friends who were riding behind Schurman told investigators there was a lot of dust in the air making it difficult to see the road in front of them. Schurman failed to negotiate a leftward curve in the road and drove off the road to the south, according to the news release. Friends on the scene attempted to save Schurman until first responders arrived, according to the news release.
