As of Sunday night, 1,687 COVID-19 patients were filling hospital beds statewide, for an average of 1,796 patients per day over the past week. That’s down from an average of 1,950 per day the previous week and 2,244 per day a month earlier. There also have been declines in the average number of patients in intensive care units and on ventilators, according to state data.
In a statement about the fatal shooting, authorities said they were dispatched to the 7700 block of South Carpenter Street at 7:26 a.m., and “responding officers encountered” a man who was involved in a dispute with someone else in the apartment. Officials said a knife was recovered from the unit where the shooting occurred but did not say whether anyone had been holding it.
Two men were shot, one fatally, in the 3400 block of West Douglas Boulevard in Lawndale around 3 p.m. Sunday, police said. A 43-year-old man was in front of an apartment building when a light-colored vehicle pulled up. A person inside the vehicle pulled out a firearm and shot the man, who suffered a gunshot wound to his head. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died. He had not been identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office early Monday.
Resignations, mostly of rank-and-file officers, have plagued Robbins, with many finding jobs in other departments that start at $40,000 to $55,000 a year plus benefits, Mathus said. Robbins starts officers at $11.50 to 12.50 an hour coming in the door, with no benefits. Sergeants start at $13 an hour.

“It’s going to be good and bad at the same time,” Dunn said under an overcast sky. “The good, it’s a new opportunity and life is all about change. The bad, the memories. We’re all going to miss Lake Shore Drive. We’re going to miss the Bears. But if they leave — that’s an if — whatever’s toward the future, I’m going to support them, regardless,” Dunn said. “Arlington Heights, if they move, here I come.”
Officers searched the area, including the parking lot. They found an unoccupied, parked vehicle “which contained what appeared to be two handguns under the driver and front passenger seats,” according to the letter. The vehicle was removed and two men were arrested, police said, adding their investigation is ongoing.
King, of the same block where the shooting occurred, according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, where he was pronounced at 6:44 p.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
Around 4 a.m. the man allegedly intentionally set a fire in the apartment building, which burned severely enough that seven people were unable to return to their units, authorities said. Police say the man then jumped from a third-story window, suffering unknown injuries in the process. No one else was hurt in the fire, officials said.
Authorities said the woman was killed after the occupants of two cars, a Toyota Camry and a black sedan, were shooting at each other while driving west on Irving Park Road from Damen Avenue. While in the 2400 block of West Irving Park Road, the Camry struck a Nissan Rogue, the car in which the woman was traveling as a passenger, police said in a media notification.
