“As someone born and raised on Chicago’s Southwest Side and a lifelong resident of its surrounding suburbs, fighting for workers, small businesses, and the middle-class in these communities is in my DNA, and that fight is not going to stop now,” Newman said in a statement.
Preliminary spring testing data also shows far fewer students met grade-level standards in English language arts and math, with the results of the Illinois Assessment of Readiness taken by students in Grades 3 to 8, and the SAT, taken by 11th grade students, showing nearly 17% fewer students met grade-level standards in English language arts in 2021 than in 2019.
Kelly, who is currently being held at the federal lockup in Brooklyn, faces 10 years to life in prison when he’s sentenced in May. The other members of his legal team, Deveraux Cannick, Thomas Farinella, and Nicole Blank Becker, will continue to work on sentencing issues, Bonjean said.
The murder of von Wiese-Mack, 62, made headlines around the world. Relatives said the widow of acclaimed composer James L. Mack had brought their then-teenage daughter to the tropical island in an effort to mend their troubled relationship. Instead, unbeknown to the victim, her daughter’s boyfriend showed up late in the vacation, about eight hours before the murder.
However, guaranteed income pilots have launched before the pandemic too, such as in Stockton, California, under former Mayor Michael Tubbs. The program doled out $500 monthly payments to a small subset of low-income families. In June 2020, Tubbs started the coalition Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, which now has more than 50 mayors on board, more than two dozen of whom are piloting the concept in some form.
“I don’t know when COVID-19 will no longer be a public health threat. I don’t know what those thresholds are. I don’t know that you know. And I’m fairly certain you’re going to vote ‘no’ on this,” Harmon told Rezin. “So, if you’d like to work with us to fashion an alternative, I’m happy to listen and see if you want to influence the legislative process. But if you’re just opposed to it, then you can be opposed to it.”
The airport has received federal funds for several expansions over the years with support from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin. “I continue to encourage both sides to meet on a solution that is in the best interest of the environment, regional jobs, and economic development,” Durbin said in a statement Thursday. “Today’s announcement is a good first step.”
“People in this community are getting very frustrated and almost desperate for some kind of guidance,” Johnson said. “It’s the right decision, right now, to make masks optional. And you mark my words, there’s going to be a lot more of this going on.”
