In August 2020, Kyle Rittenhouse — a 17-year-old from north suburban Antioch — crossed state lines and volunteered to patrol downtown Kenosha, Wisconsin, amid turmoil surrounding the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by a white police officer. Carrying an AR-15-style rifle that police say a friend illegally purchased for him, Rittenhouse fatally shot two people and wounded a third.

Kimberly Motley, who represents Grosskreutz as well as Rosenbaum’s estate, told the Tribune she understood the legal justification for banning the word “victim,” but she objected to the defense team’s attempts to demean the three men as “rioters, looters and arsonists” given their client’s own behavior. If not for Rittenhouse’s decision to illegally carry a gun that night, she said, two people would still be alive and Grosskreutz would not have suffered a debilitating injury.

The party, which drew more than 200 people, was initially intended for a group of about 50 family members and friends, relatives of the hosts said. On Sept. 3 in the 6500 block of South Ellis, MJ was getting his hair braided inside a building when, grainy video evidence shows, right before 9 p.m. a “dark-colored” vehicle pulled in front of the building, Brown said. Three people got out and started shooting into the building. Two bullets when through the window, hitting MJ in the head. He later died from his injuries on Sept. 5.

One victim, a 50-year-old man, was shot in the head and shoulder and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. A 39-year old man was shot twice in his shoulder and took himself to Loretto Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
