Another 5,044 new confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases were reported by state health officials Wednesday, the most in a single day since Sept. 10. Over the past week, the state has averaged 3,122 cases per day, a 41% increase from the previous week and the highest level since late September, when the late-summer surge driven by the highly contagious delta variant was subsiding.

Then 17 and living in Antioch, Rittenhouse fired the shots while patrolling downtown Kenosha with an AR-15-style rifle amid the turmoil and unrest surrounding the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by a white police officer. Despite not being old enough to openly carry a gun, Rittenhouse said he volunteered to act as an armed guard that night after businesses had been burned and vandalized during demonstrations held the previous day.

Several allies of U.S. Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, the Chicago Democrat who is the state’s lone Latino congressman, also have expressed interest in the race including state Sen. Omar Aquino of Chicago, Eira Corral Sepulveda, a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District commissioner, and state Rep. Delia Ramirezstate Rep. Delia Ramirezstate Rep. Delia Ramirezstate Rep. Delia Ramirez, a Chicago Democrat.

When jurors walked by Rittenhouse after the judge called a recess to allow him to regain his composure, many looked up at him in apparent sympathy as he continued to cry. On a courtroom bench across the room and within earshot of the jurors, Rittenhouse’s mother, Wendy Rittenhouse, sobbed loudly.

“It just really has to do with just the change of seasons,” Borchardt said of the huge variations Chicago is seeing this week. “You get these bigger dynamic weather systems that are able to pull in warmer temperatures from the south or colder temperatures from the north. And that seasonal transition is just far more prone to seeing these wild swings.”
