The Bulls are far from returned to normal — Matt Thomas remains in protocols despite being listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game, and Zach LaVine, Ayo Dosunmu, Troy Brown Jr. and Alize Johnson are expected to remain sidelined through Christmas, according to coach Billy Donovan. But with no new cases among players or coaches, the Bulls are hopeful they’ve escaped the widest team outbreak in the NBA so far this season.
Just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, Aurora police received reports of a man down in the 400 block of Clark Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, police officials said in a press release Saturday.
Ned Smith, who used to teach at Northwestern University, was diagnosed with brain cancer in December 2018. His wife, Erin Smith, 40, said they eventually heard about another family dealing with the same diagnosis, the Agnews, and “ironically” Ned and Mark already knew of each other. The Hlavaceks happened to live down the street from the Smith family. The Smiths also have four children: sons Finn, 14, and Beckett, 12, and daughters Eliza, 9, and Cecily, 6.
Green used a 9 mm gun to shoot both Clarence Whalum, 22, and Kimani Whalum, 20, on Oct. 5 inside their residence in the 19000 block of Farm Crest Terrace, according to police Chief John Galvin. Police were called there at 7:30 p.m. for a report of a home invasion and found the brothers with gunshot wounds inside. They were taken to area hospitals and later pronounced dead.

Danny Simmons, 28, of the 7700 block of South Honore Street in the Gresham neighborhood, was charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 22 fatal shooting of 17-year-old Tremayne Maltbia in the 7800 block of South Wood Street, also in the Gresham neighborhood, police said.
A 41-year-old passenger was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The driver was taken in fair condition to the same hospital, and three other passengers, two men and a woman were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
Rahm Emanuel, the former mayor of Chicago, was confirmed to serve as ambassador to Japan by a vote of 48-21. Nominees to be ambassadors to Spain, Vietnam and Somalia were among those confirmed by voice vote soon afterward. The votes came after an agreement was reached to hold a vote concerning Nord Stream 2 sanctions before Jan. 14.
For older kids, the trends are similar, with troubling signs heading into the winter break. Suburban Cook County, for example, now has the highest daily rate of kids age 12 to 17 testing positive, topping 80 per 100,000, when the rate was just half that heading into Thanksgiving break. Most other parts of the region are seeing similarly stark rises.
