State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart on Tuesday called it “a very difficult decision,” but one that was guided by legal practicalities and discussions with veteran prosecutors. The decision was also made in concert with the mother of Lasondra Shaw, who was shot to death on June 29, 2007 by two men who burst into her North Chicago apartment firing guns.
“Even then, the American Civil Liberties Union objected to allowing police wide latitude about whom to stop and pat down. It was clear that a disparate impact in the application of the practice was inevitable,” Sheley wrote. “The intervening years have shown this to be true. … There was a systemic policy of stopping a large number of people, which led to targeting (B)lack people, especially youth, by instructing officers to stop the ‘right people at the right place at the right time.’”
James Robert Elliott, 24, who also goes by “Jim Bob,” was charged in and indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Washington with six counts, including civil disorder, assault of a federal officer, entering a restricted building with a dangerous weapon, and carrying out an act of violence on Capitol grounds.
According to police in the statement, “fearing for his own safety, and the safety of other occupants inside the home,” the officer fired his gun, striking the individual around 8:50 p.m. Paramedics who were already at the home rendered aid, but the man was pronounced dead. A gun was recovered from the scene, police said.

The NHL also postponed the Columbus Blue Jackets’ games through Dec. 26 “due to concern with the number of positive cases within the last several days as well as concern for continued COVID spread.” Team activities for the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers and Ottawa Senators also were shut down, joining the Panthers, Predators, Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs as teams that have paused operations.
UIC students, faculty and staff will also be required to get a COVID-19 test before Jan. 24, regardless of vaccination status, the school said. Students, faculty and staff who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated will be required to test twice a week. Starting Jan. 5, students, faculty and staff in residential housing and in performing arts will be required to get a weekly test and all students are being encouraged to get tested weekly.
Other closures, announced in waves of social media posts, have included Big Kids, Billy Sunday, Cabra, The Duck Inn, Four Letter Word Coffee, Giant, Kumiko, Lae Peng You, Lardon, Little Goat, Little Victories, The Native, Outside Voices, Rose Mary, Scofflaw, Sepia, S.K.Y., Tied House, Verve Wine, Wazwan, and Old Irving and Begyle breweries. Not all were prompted by an exposure to COVID-19, with some closing solely as a precaution amid a national and statewide uptick in cases this month that has many flocking to get vaccine boosters and tests ahead of the Christmas weekend.
