The extreme cold, however, was short-lived. O’Hare experienced daily low temperatures below zero just twice between December and February, -1 degrees (Jan. 7) and -6 degrees (Jan. 26). Many days in January and February experienced below-normal high temperatures, but nothing severe.
As samples come in to the lab, analysis will involve steps including DNA extraction and sequencing a gene that serves as a bar code for different species, Coleman said. Sequences can then be compared between sites, as well as with spring and summer samples to see if there are, in fact, cold specialists.

For students in kindergarten through first grade, who have never experienced a typical, prepandemic school year, COVID-19 masks have become as ubiquitous as crayons, glue and scissors, and masked or unmasked, the youngsters greeted their arriving classmates with spirited squeals.
“We were a record holder for a brief period, but I couldn’t be happier because to me Jackie Robinson was not only an incredibly accomplished athlete, as was Michael Jordan, but also an incredible pioneer,” Cole said. “I think it’s fitting that Jackie Robinson, whose contribution goes way beyond sports, has the highest valued ticket.”
The agency later issued a correction, writing: “Effective today, Feb. 28, 2022, due to the CDC’s recommendation that masks are needed only in areas of high transmission, Governor J.B. Pritzker lifted the state’s indoor masking requirements, including the use of face coverings in day care settings.”

The United Center announced Monday it will lift mask restrictions for attendees at upcoming concerts, Bulls and Blackhawks games following a statewide move to reduce mask requirements. Fans will still be required to present a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination to enter the arena, but will not be required to wear a mask.

But in CPS, universal masking is stipulated in a hard-fought COVID-19 safety agreement with the Chicago Teachers Union, which came about after union members refused to teach in person during the omicron surge in January, resulting in five days of canceled classes.
