Last February, the mayor’s commission on monuments flagged statues of Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and William McKinley, as well as a Benjamin Franklin statue, a police memorial tied to the Haymarket Riot and a statue of Leif Erikson at Humboldt Park, as potentially problematic, but did not make final recommendations about what should happen.

“This is a kind of case, if this is in fact true, of such incredible significance — somebody who has really shaped Illinois politics for 40 years, dominated almost every aspect of life, from a political standpoint, from a legislative standpoint — you better have a tight case because you’re going to take the shot, you’re not going to want to miss,” Lightfoot said.

Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, for decades the most powerful politician in the state, was indicted Wednesday on federal racketeering charges alleging an array of bribery schemes aimed at using the power of his office for personal gain.

Since Reed’s sentence was commuted, Reed’s attorneys argued, the matter is closed. Prosecutors cannot try him again since the order to throw out his conviction was never technically signed, they said, and Reed’s sentence has been completed. Any further action would be in violation of Reed’s double jeopardy rights, they argued at a hearing in November.

Officer Christopher Hillas, 43, was charged Feb. 16 with the felonies of aggravated battery on a public way and official misconduct, but a grand jury returned a decision of no bill for the indictment, which dismisses the charges against Hillas. On Monday, his case was dropped based on the grand jury’s finding, the state’s attorney’s office said in a statement.

The girl was sitting in the passenger’s seat of a car driven by a family member in the 2300 block of West 72nd Street, when three men began firing from the street at a different car, according to the police report. The targeted car sped northbound as the men apparently continued shooting, striking the passing family, the report stated.

In 2020, Acevedo, a former Chicago police officer, told the Tribune he had worked as a consultant paid by John Bradley, a former House Democrat from Marion who was a contract lobbyist for ComEd until November 2019. Acevedo said then that he did not lobby for ComEd, but he said he was a consultant for Bradley about ComEd issues.

Edgewater resident Leonard Mogul, a community advocate and founder of Chicago children’s organization Arts4Kids Foundation, is partnering with Waukegan pastor Julie Contreras to send care packages to women and children in Uzhhorod, Ukraine, Mogul said. Mogul’s organization has previously sent food to refugee children in detention centers at the Mexican border, he said, so Contreras reached out to him about turning aid toward Ukraine.
