“Medical debt — much like economic insecurity, housing instability, and those other factors I mentioned before — predominantly affects people of color, working families, and hourly workers,” Preckwinkle said. “This program will have an enormous impact on racial equity in Cook County.”
The leak was eventually fixed and water pressure returned, but many residents said the leak was just one in a long line of problems with their water service over the years. A Tribune report found that town officials had been alerted to leaks in recent years but struggled to identify and fix them, leading to a ballooning water bill for the town.

“The Russian army is aiming missiles at schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, ambulances, orphanages,” she said. “The army is shooting at buses and people on the street. These are war crimes … and I truly believe that Putin’s goal is to destroy the free and democratic world that we’ve built since World War II, and destroy the rule of law that has given us peace and prosperity.”
The village would disburse the money to the owner — the international, billion-dollar, Paris-headquartered Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield — for upgrading elements such as heating and air conditioning, fire suppression, electrical and data service, facades, common areas, landscaping and lighting, and for demolition for new construction.

Damis, a bartender at The Cove lounge in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood, had just been paid in cash and was walking home after his shift when surveillance captured McShan starting to follow him a short distance from the scene of the attack in the 4900 block of South Greenwood Avenue. Around 4:50 a.m., Damis suffered multiple stab wounds and collapsed on the street, authorities said.
After picking up the weapon, he quickly fired one officer, grazing him in the head, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Papa. As he ran from the scene, Harris-Caldwell fired on the second officer still seated in his police vehicle, striking him in the leg, Papa said.
