Toledo, who was shot March 29, 2021, near the 2400 block of South Sawyer Avenue, was the youngest person to be fatally shot by Chicago police in recent years. In a split second, Toledo can be seen running from Officer Eric Stillman, tossing a gun behind a fence, turning toward the officer, raising his hands and being shot, video shows.
During the deposition, Madigan denied having reached out to any political allies to try to stack the 2016 primary ballot with candidates to undermine Gonzales’ bid. Instead, Madigan maintained, Gonzales was backed by former Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, as part of a “Republican Rauner invasion of the Democratic primary.” Rauner and Gonzales both denied that.

That outcome is fairly typical in Illinois, a state that has experienced few successful book bans in recent months, according to a new report by PEN America that found 1,586 fully or partially successful challenges nationwide between July 1, 2021, and March 31. (A challenged book was considered banned if access was diminished, for example, by removing it from library shelves but keeping it available for checkout at the circulation desk.)
“All city employees, including Chicago police officers, who fail to comply may also face disciplinary action, up to and including termination. These decisions will be addressed at an individual and department level, and are being undertaken in a manner that will not impact public safety or the continuity of everyday government operations,” her office had said in a March statement.
The victim, identified as Jaylon Jones by authorities, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County medical examiner’s office, although it and South Holland police gave different information about where Jones lived.
Aurora police responded to investigate shots fired in the 300 block of Shadybrook Lane around 9 p.m. March 10, according to the release. They found an 8-year-old German shepherd lying on the front porch of a home. The dog, named Jameson, had been shot in the right side of his nose, with the bullet exiting below his left ear, officials said.
Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Glen Fifield, whose agency initially handled the investigation, said agencies are still under investigating, but he and Hamady said Taylor’s death hasn’t been classified as a homicide at this time. It’s conceivable, but not conclusive, that Taylor could’ve walked south from the crash site seeking help, Hamady said.
