In December, the River North Residents Association, a 22,000-member nonprofit neighborhood advocacy group, sent a letter to Ald. Walter Burnett, 27th; Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd ; and Ald. Brian Hopkins, 2nd, expressing concern over the Bally’s Freedom Center proposal. The letter, which is posted on the group’s website, said noise, traffic congestion and crime would likely be exacerbated by the casino, “negatively impacting” home values and local businesses, the group said.

“These are the people who got swindled out of homeownership,” Lewis Johnson said. “Regardless of what solution we come up with, we have to remember that the value of these neighborhoods needs to increase in comparison to their white counterparts. Whatever solution we create for redress, it can’t make a specific population — in this case, Black people, vulnerable again because when you segregate Black people you make them vulnerable to people who are greedy, even if they’re not racist, there are institutions or businesses that view them as a market to financially take advantage of.”

China Eastern’s flight No. 5735 had been traveling at around 30,000 feet when suddenly, just after 2:20 p.m., the plane entered a deep dive at its cruising altitude speed of 523 mph, according to data from flight-tracking website FlightRadar24.com. The data suggests the plane crashed within a minute and a half of whatever went wrong.

“It is the lifeblood of our city, and many of our residents depend upon the CTA, whether bus, rail, or a combination, to get from their homes, to get to their jobs,” she said. “And we need to make sure that they have confidence that when they swipe in to get on the train, to get on the bus, that they’re going to be safe. And that’s why that heightened police presence, and protecting, frankly, the CTA workers, is also important.”

“It was a very hard thing to do, and we were under a lot of pressure, but people seemed desperate,” said Peterson, 72, who operates his community supported agriculture farm, known as a CSA, in Caledonia, Ill., about 80 miles northwest of Chicago.

In 2010, Marshall paid $1.36 million for the five-bedroom house in Lincolnwood. Now, the Marshalls are moving on. Built in 2003, the house is situated on a 0.40-acre property and has 6-1/2 bathrooms, vaulted ceilings, two-story windows, a separate private apartment for guests, a first-floor primary bedroom suite with a fireplace, a gym, a home theater and a game room. The house also has an indoor pool.
