The store, which will be located at 3 W. Chicago Ave. in the new One Chicago high-rise, will open on April 27. The store will be nearly twice the square footage of an existing Whole Foods located a couple of blocks away at 30 W. Huron St., according to a spokesperson for the chain. The Huron Street store will close.
The permanent closure will mark the end of a century-old, family-owned business, as its third-generation owner, Norman Dinkel Jr. plans to retire, longtime employee Joan Elias told the Tribune on Tuesday. The family has overseen operations at the beloved neighborhood institution for four generations.
Lincolnwood may also be getting an Amazon Fresh store. Richard Tucker, the developer of a multi-use site at the northwest corner of Lincoln and Touhy Avenues, said last July that an Amazon Fresh store would be part of the mix in the yet-to-be-built development, which sits on the site of the former purple hotel. At that time, Tucker said Amazon had signed a lease for the new development, called District 1860.

The proposal is facing pushback from the River North Residents Association, a 22,000-member nonprofit neighborhood advocacy group, which sent a letter in December to Ald. Walter Burnett, 27th, Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd, and Ald. Brian Hopkins, 2nd, expressing concern that the casino would exacerbate noise, traffic congestion and crime.

“Eviction has immense collateral consequences,” said Debbie Reznick senior program officer at Polk Bros. Foundation, which is funding the Chicago Bar Foundation’s evaluation, in a statement. “The displacement and instability caused by the eviction process can exacerbate physical and mental health issues, disrupt children’s educations, impact job performance, and ultimately lead to illness, unemployment, and homelessness. Learnings from the evaluation of the Right to Counsel pilot program will inform efforts to expand and sustain legal representation and other supportive services for tenants facing eviction.”
