Located in an elevator building, the unit has two bathrooms, 11-foot ceilings, polished concrete floors throughout, an open kitchen, a primary en-suite bedroom with a walk-in closet, and a formal dining area. The couple first listed the condo in April 2021 for $445,000 and then cut their asking price to $435,000 in June and then to $415,000 in August before finding a buyer.

Last year, El Milagro employees saw a round of raises that ranged between $1 to $3 per hour followed by a second raise of 36 cents across the board in December, said Shelly Ruzicka, Arise Chicago’s communications and development director. Before the raises, Ruzicka said, workers made approximately $15 to $17 an hour, with few reaching the higher end. Now, employees are starting at about $16.50 an hour, with most others making about $17 to $20 an hour. Arise Chicago estimates the raises affected 450 workers.

“If you want to buy a $700,000 to $800,000 to a million-dollar home, you can buy them anywhere, there’s plenty of listings out there. But if you try to get anything under $450,000 in a major metropolitan area, it’s a dog race,” he said. “As interest rates rise, it will take a chunk of buyers out of the market because they can no longer afford the homes that have appreciated so much. Interest rates will have to go up significantly in order for it to start to soften housing prices. It’s likely that’s not going to happen.”

The report also highlighted the best 25 private, nonprofit hospital systems in the country for so-called “fair share spending” — those that spent more on charity care and in their communities than what they likely saved through tax exemptions. Illinois health system Memorial Health made that list, ranking 15th in the country for the highest amount spent on charity care and community investment over what the system likely saved from tax exemptions, at $31 million. Memorial has hospitals in Decatur, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Springfield and Taylorville.

In Florida, Webster said, more than 39,000 Floridians died from opioid abuse or related problems between 1999 and 2020. Walgreens, he said, sold about one of every four opioids in the state over a similar time span often under questionable circumstances, such as a shady doctor, fake prescriptions or huge amounts of drugs obviously far in excess of what was necessary for a given patient.
