Early Monday,125 members of the Teamsters Local 703 went on strike at the Des Plaines facility, saying Sysco had failed to bargain in good faith on a new contract. Since negotiations started in January, “almost no progress has been made,” the union said in a news release. The contract expired in February 2020 but was temporarily extended.
Since 2005, meanwhile, the Postal Service has been cited by the federal government 1,150 times for underpaying letter carriers and other employees, including one case that involved 164 violations, according to Labor Department data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request. The agency determined that those workers lost about $659,000 in pay. But it allowed the Postal Service to pay back less than half after negotiations with the agency — a common practice at the Labor Department. About 19% of the cases did not indicate whether the Postal Service paid back employees.

“After addressing the community’s concerns regarding alley congestions, traffic and overall density, we are disappointed that Alderman Hopkins does not support the project in its current form given the economic benefits, including additional tax revenue, jobs and investments in underserved communities this project will create,” she said in a statement. “We are evaluating alternative options to redevelop the site.”
“We need robotics, advanced technology and automation to meet customer demand,” she said. “It’s just that simple. This state-of-the-art technology is helping supercharge our fast delivery, increase efficiency, reduce defects, lower prices and improve workplaces around the world.”
The latest estimates reflected the push and pull of many factors flowing from the pandemic, and the full impact may take years to sort out. The deep but relatively short recession slashed revenue from payroll taxes. But the death toll from COVID-19, concentrated among older people, reduced future Social Security benefit payouts. Hospitals were stressed by the influx of COVID patients, but Medicare didn’t have to pay for as many knee surgeries, colonoscopies and other more routine procedures. Birth rates and immigration, which tend to bolster the two programs, both fell.
