A water park, a vertical neighborhood, and a school: Winning ideas in Thompson Center design contest
Competition juror Bonnie McDonald, president & CEO of Landmarks Illinois said in a statement the contest “proves how, with creativity, the Thompson Center has lasting value — be it through a mixed use, civic and/or recreational destination as the winning designs imagine. The failure to protect and adapt this one-of-a-kind space would be shortsighted and rob Chicago of one of its greatest architectural achievements.”

During the pandemic, Illinois has funneled more than $700 million in relief funding into the state’s child care industry, according to the governor’s office. Through an initial round of grants, over 5,000 providers received monetary support, including 85% of eligible child care centers and 40% of licensed family child care homes. On average, child care centers have received over $270,000 each and child care homes have received an average of $13,000, according to the governor’s office.
The grandchildren of legendary Chicago gangster Al Capone will sell 174 family heirlooms at an Oct. 8 auction titled “A Century of Notoriety: The Estate of Al Capone” in Sacramento, California. The family heirlooms include his favorite gun that he called “Sweetheart” (estimated value $150K), his diamond-monogrammed watch ($50K), engraved jewelry, furniture from the Palm Island home, family photos and more. Home Depot, meanwhile, said it helped catch a man who allegedly used e-commerce sites to sell merchandise stolen from the retailer’s stores, including some in Illinois earlier this summer. Law enforcement recovered nearly $50,000 in merchandise from the man’s home, according to Kyle Penoyer, who leads investigations at Home Depot.
The measure aims to put Illinois on a path to 100% carbon-free energy by 2050, with coal, oil and natural gas-fired power plants scheduled to close over the coming decades. It also seeks to boosts the development of wind and solar energy across the state, put more electric vehicles on the road, and make it easier for Black and Latino workers and businesses to enter the renewable energy industry.
