The March 11 auction at Christie’s in London immediately catapulted Beeple’s artwork into the realm of the most expensive pieces ever sold by living artists, alongside a well-known swimming pool painting by David Hockney and an iconic stainless steel rabbit sculpture by Jeff Koons. And it has also kicked off a new explosion of interest in non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, a sort of cryptocurrency-adjacent technology that provides the digital equivalent of a certificate of authenticity. In the meantime, Churchill Downs bought a majority ownership of Rivers Casino in Des Plaines. After that, Churchill Downs shocked the racing world by rejecting a casino at the racetrack, and instead put the site up for sale this year. The corporate officers also chose not to seek racing dates for next year, effectively preventing any future owner from holding races then, in what was seen as a move to prevent competition with its nearby casino.

In Australia, stay-at-home orders closed half of McDonald’s dining rooms during the quarter but delivery orders reached a record high. Kempczinski said that even when markets reopen, delivery demand remains elevated; the company doesn’t break out its percentage of delivery orders, but Kempczinksi said they have grown by “billions and billions” over the last few years.
And Lightfoot administration officials estimate the $22.9 million hike tied to the national CPI would only cost the owner of a $250,000 home about $18 per year. Another $19 increase on such a homeowner’s property tax bill would come from a $25 million tax hike the mayor has proposed to pay for her capital spending plan. The final piece of the tax increase, $28.6 million, would only be assessed on new properties, bringing the total to $76.5 million.
During the first half of 2021, the American Association of Poison Control Centers, a nonprofit organization representing 55 centers across the U.S., reported 2,077 emergency calls related to children 12 and under ingesting cannabis products. There were 153 such incidents reported during all of 2016, according to association data.
