Car Owners Is the 2026 Nissan Frontier PRO 4X the Right First Truck for You?

“Ask Roosevelt” https://autonetwork.com/ about this Frontier.
From Car To Truck: Ride And Comfort
Switching from a car to this Frontier PRO-4X, the first thing you notice is the ride: it is firmer and taller than a sedan, but impressively controlled for an off-road‑oriented, body‑on‑frame pickup. Owners consistently describe the Frontier Pro-4X ride as “very good for a Four Wheel Drive truck” and comfortable even on long highway drives, though more trucklike and less isolated than a crossover.
The Bilstein off‑road shocks and multi‑leaf rear suspension help it soak up broken pavement and gravel better than older midsize trucks, but you still feel more of the road than in a unibody car with independent rear suspension. Several owners highlight highway comfort and seating as standout strengths, with one calling it “the most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever driven in,” yet you should expect a bit more vertical motion and tire noise than in a typical family car.
Steering, Handling, And Daily Manners
On the open road, the truck tracks confidently and “handles well on pavement,” changing direction more like a big car than you’d expect from a body‑on‑frame 4×4. The tradeoff is that those all‑terrain tires and off‑road tuning that make it so sure‑footed on dirt also add some low‑level road noise and a bit less precision than a car on smooth twisty pavement.
Powertrain, Capability, And Ride Tradeoffs
The standard 3.8‑liter V6 (310 hp, 281 lb‑ft) and 9‑speed automatic give the Frontier a strong, naturally aspirated character that feels more relaxed and linear than many small turbo engines. Owners and testers praise its smooth shifting and ample acceleration, noting that it feels confident merging and passing even when loaded.
With shift‑on‑the‑fly 4WD, a 2‑speed transfer case, Bilstein shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, terrain modes, and skid plates, the PRO‑4X is built to go far past where any car would safely travel. Real owners report excellent off‑road performance and appreciate having the rear locker and Around View Monitor with Off‑Road mode when picking their way through ruts, rocks, and tight trails. The obvious cost versus a car: fuel economy around 16 city / 20 highway / 18 combined and a higher, heavier feel in stop‑and‑go traffic.
Cabin, Tech, And Daily Livability
Inside, this PRO‑4X, when equipped with the Convenience and Premium package,s feels much more like a modern, well‑equipped SUV than a basic work truck. Leather‑appointed seats with unique PRO‑4X stitching, heated front seats, a heated leather steering wheel, dual‑zone climate control, and power driver and passenger adjustments make long stints far easier on your back than older pickups.
The 12.3‑inch touchscreen with NissanConnect, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi‑Fi hotspot, and NissanConnect Services gives you the sort of infotainment experience most newer car owners expect. Some owners like the upgraded Fender 10‑speaker audio, but at least one long‑term PRO‑4X owner calls that system underwhelming for the money, noting weak bass and a need to crank it to get satisfying sound.
Safety, Practicality, And Owner Complaints
For car owners used to advanced driver aids, this truck brings a reassuring suite: automatic emergency braking with forward collision warning, blind‑spot warning, rear cross‑traffic alert, lane departure warning, intelligent cruise control, rear automatic braking, high‑beam assist, and a 360° Intelligent Around View Monitor with moving object detection. Owners appreciate the clear cameras and 360 view, both for parking and when easing through tight off‑road spots.
Practical truck hardware—spray‑in bedliner, Utili‑track rails with movable cleats, 120V outlets in the bed and rear console, trailer hitch with wiring, damping and locking tailgate, and LED under‑rail lighting—are everyday quality‑of‑life upgrades over any car trunk. Common minor complaints from PRO‑4X owners include stiff steering and a large turning circle, occasional interior rattles (especially the front passenger seat over rough roads), some dashboard warp reports in hot climates, and the need to re-enable the start/stop system at each restart on certain trims.

For a first‑time truck buyer used to cars, the 2026 Frontier PRO‑4X Crew Cab 4×4 V6 delivers a distinctly truck‑like ride and feel, but wraps it in enough comfort, tech, and safety that the daily adjustment is more about expectations than sacrifices.
MSRP: $48,735.00
