Calumet Park breaks ground on new apartment complex

The Village of Calumet Park recently held a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new housing development scheduled to be built on a 6-acre site at 12300 South Ashland Avenue. Calumet Park Mayor Ron Denson was joined by state, community, and local officials on the site that once housed nearly 200 mobile homes for the announcement.

The Calumet Park Apartments is a new mixed-use development that will consist of a single-story medical facility and three separate four-story apartment complexes. Each building will have 56 one and two-bedroom units creating 168 units when complete.

Not to be confused with Calumet City, Calumet Park is located 18 miles south of downtown Chicago in Cook County, Illinois. It is an established inner-ring suburb of Chicago with an area of approximately 3.1 square miles. The Village of Calumet Park is well positioned with convenient access to the City of Chicago and connections to the rest of the Chicago Region.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) helped Calumet Park create a Comprehensive Plan for the Village of Calumet Park, which serves as the Village’s official land use and development guide. The process took 18 months and was finally adopted by the village board on December 10, 2020.

The mayor during his speech expressed their appreciation for CMAP’s work which put the Village in a position to consider development projects that would increase its population and strengthen its future economy. The CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program provided direction to resources the village pursued including from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

It is the hope of the Mayor and the Village this project will attract young professionals, who prefer to live in a community setting with the convenience of either the Metra Electric or I-57 to the Loop.  The Metra Electric District has one station within the Village and multiple stations located just west.
