“That (1983) staff really came together, especially in the second half of the season,” La Russa recalled last week. “It’s a different-looking staff. That staff was really young: Hoyt, Dotson, Burns. Here you have three established veterans that are really, really helpful. They’re great mentors and leaders. Then you’ve got the two young starters that are there now (Giolito and Cease) and Kopech, who can feed off that. And then you’ve got the young relievers and a veteran like Liam (Hendriks).

Illinois is in line to receive $8.1 billion in relief from President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan, but the latest budget proposal calls for spending only a portion of that, with $1 billion to be used for infrastructure projects. The other $1.5 billion would be used for programs such as business relief, violence prevention and affordable housing, Rep. Greg Harris of Chicago, the House Democratic majority leader, said during a committee hearing Monday before the spending plan was sent to the House floor on a party-line vote.

Republicans asked why Democrats were moving the primary date for only 2022. In his answer, sponsoring state Rep. Maurice West, a Rockford Democrat, didn’t say anything about the congressional map, instead noting that “the state has always had a really long window between the primary and the general, which makes the political season long and risky and negatively affecting public policymaking.”

Stewart signed a free-agent deal with the Cubs in the offseason. He’s appeared in 17 big-league games, including six starts, all with the Minnesota Twins from 2018-19. Stewart became the choice to start Monday because he is adequately stretched out and should help avoid taxing the bullpen. He’s pitched at least five innings in each of his four starts with Iowa this season.
