With this saga swirling, talk of the race itself took a back seat, but there was little evidence of the week’s tumult on a mellow Preakness day. The race returned to its familiar date on the third Saturday in May, and fans were back in limited numbers (10,000 compared to 131,256 at the last pre-pandemic Preakness in 2019). But there was no raging infield party and no threat of rainstorms to add anxiety to the proceedings.

Prosecutors said prior to the shooting, the man who was critically wounded in the shooting was with a tow truck driver, 32-year-old Nicholas Athans, who was his employer, following a work shift on Jan. 16. Athans, a Brookfield man, was charged earlier this year with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery through discharge of a firearm in connection with the shooting, court records show.

What might sting most is that playoff spots were up for grabs in the Eastern Conference this season. The Atlanta Hawks fired their coach at the beginning of March and entered Saturday as the conference’s No. 4 seed. Former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau has resurrected the New York Knicks, along with some key contributions from Derrick Rose and even Taj Gibson, to secure a top-six seed in the conference. At the very least, a berth in the play-in tournament, for the Nos. 7-10 seeds in each conference, was not a very high bar to clear.

“Since that time, we have returned the system to normal operations, delivering millions of gallons per hour to the markets we serve,” Colonial Pipeline said in a tweet Saturday. Those markets include Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South and North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The 35-year-old man exited a CTA Blue Line train shortly before 2:30 a.m. in the 200 block of South Dearborn Street in the Loop neighborhood and asked for water from a person waiting on the CTA platform, police said in a media notification. A witness noticed the man had been stabbed several times in the left arm, and called 911, police said.

It was former Leicester defender Ben Chilwell’s cross that looked to have been deflected into his own net by veteran captain Wes Morgan. But video replays detected an offside that ensured, after four losing finals, Leicester would finally win world football’s oldest cup competition by 1-0 in the 140th final.
